Whew - the party's over. I did pretty well at avoiding the known toxic people and fatty food and it was pretty smooth sailing. But as one would expect from being in the presence of a thin person, the "helpful hint" did come up. Doesn't it always? And is anyone besides me sick to death of people offerring their stinkin' advice when it wasn't asked for in the first place?
So I'm talking to this woman - a family friend about 75 years old and in terrific shape. She, her husband, my hubby and I are talking about golfing - something hubby and I would like to take up again now that the teen wants nothing to do with us and would love to have 2-3 unsupervised hours alone (He hasn't found the nanny-cam yet. Who's the smart little mommy?). This woman and her husband golf frequently and she was telling me all the benefits of it and when she got to the word "exercise", she looked directly at me, raised her eyebrows and nodded her head - as if the word were quite foreign to me. These facial gymnastics of hers were the equivalent of bold, italic and underline if she were in writing mode. But alas, she was in preaching mode. Oh, if you could only please speak a little more slowly so I could really understand you, Yoda.
So here's what I said back to her: Oh yes, of course. (As in, "isn't that interesting? Tell me more about this "exercise" thingy because as you can see from my shape I have little to no experience with it")
And here's what I said in my head: Yes, Wanda, it might interest you and your ballpeen hammer subtlety to know that I've actually heard of exercise and am employing it quite frequently these days. But as long as we're sharing here, let me offer you a lesson in common courtesy that you'll never acutally know you've been taught and that's because I know how to keep my mouth shut when it comes to embarrassing or humiliating people in front of others under the guise of "helpfulness". That said, you really ought to do something about this habit you have of dressing 40 years your junior. Mini-skirts and AARP just don't mix. Glass houses and people throwing stones? Ditto. So please, just zip it.
The following day, hubby and I went to the driving range to brush up on those old golfing skills - teeing off on balls, not people. My helpful hubby wanted to know if he should use a wedge or a driver to help me get that chip off my shoulder. How could I not love this guy?

I didn't manage to avoid the toxic people or the toxic food yesterday at a family lunch. I was so upset, I'm taking a break from my family!
Great post!
lollol. mini skirts and aarp. my first laugh of the day. Enjoy your golf game, it's exxxxerrrrciiiiise. lol.
Chris
Wanda deserved a "bitch, please" from you...I cannot stand people like that! I've gotten unsolicited "advice" - even lately, and I just want to say "you don't have any idea of what I USED to look like, so shut it!" but of course being the people-pleaser, I don't.
Mini skirts & AARP - ouch! See, it does help to reenact the crazy stuff later. Nicely done.
I always enjoy hitting golf balls when I imagine they are actually someone's heads. Takes all kinds of people to make the world go round -- I'm shaking my head at your AARP mini-skirted "friend." :)
I always aim at the guy driving the little tractor picking up balls. B*stard!
Facial gymnastics....that made me howl!!
Forget about her....you can always get thin, but she will probably always be an asshole.
Mini skirts and AARP don't go together...then what the hell am I loosing this weight for??!! LOL
Great post!
She has issues, that woman. (and, ugh! at the mini skirt picture that I now can't get out of my head!)
I love that comment from your hubby.... seems like you both have quite the sense of humor!
And I just ordered my mini skirt from the AARP Seniors R Us Catalog! Damn!!
Hey...I'm a fat golfer. I'd recommend a 7-iron to knock the chip off your shoulder. A wedge would cut too deep and take quite a large divot.
Next time you play, put her initials on the ball with a Sharpie pen, then knock the shit out of it. That's what I do when someone has annoyed me or made me mad. The ink eventually wears off, but I feel better. :)
FORE, Wanda, we're comin' to get you.
Love it. Thanks for the laugh!
Horrid. I can remember in high school it was a holiday and we were getting together with my moms side of the family, I had lost about 25 lbs and I was feeling really good and my mother's Aunt says to me, you are looking good, you have a ways to go still but keep up the good work. I will never forget that and I'm well out of high school, how devastatingly hurtful that was to me. Some people just don't get it.
Oh, let's have fun thinking up comments for the miniskirt lady... let's see... "Don't you worry about melanoma, with your skin showing like that? You know people over 70 have to be really careful."
I'm so glad that things went well (enough) with the family, you only had to deal with the one seahag.
Mr. Gigi sounds like he is a hoot too!
And Larkspur---too funny! :-)
Too funny. Ah, she's 75. You have to give the elders the benefit of the doubt that they are too senile to know good manners. ;-)
Path to Health
It's amazing how toxic people can be. I think more so than the food!
Glad you're back to golfing! Sounds like fun (i haven't tried yet).
Sorry about the lady....insensitive people irk me to no end!
